Goodwood Day 1

2.50 Plenty of inform horses go to post for this opening contest on ITV’s 5 day Goodwood coverage. Top of the list is Eagle’s Way who won all 4 races last year and resumed with a great run when just touched off at Yarmouth last week, he obviously has more to come but I have never been a fan of the jockey and can’t bring myself to tip anything with him riding. Lord Protector & Pride Of America come into this on the back of a win & should be in the mix. Millebosc is at the head of the market but he has not pulled up many trees since coming over from France ( good form at 2/3 put tailed off since ) & at such a short price for a competitive race is one I would swerve. The Johnston yard always like a winner here & have done well in the race previously & their runner Outbreak looks interesting. He has only tried the trip once before this season & was cantering all over his rivals when taking it up late on , but he did not find a lot that day & the trip just has me guessing ; its possible he stays but far from certain . As such its a no bet race for me

3.25 Two yards that have good handles on 2 year old form head the market in the shape of Haatem & Golden Mind. It’s hard to split them on form. Iberian’s debut win’s form is poor & he has plenty to find for me. Mountain Bear is one of his top yard’s lesser lights at this level and is another with plenty to find. A no bet race

4.00 Kinross brings the best form into the race & ran a fine race at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago & 7f is his best trip. Isaac Shelby drops back to 7f & again this is the colt’s bets trip. Pogo is more than capable but just might be a tick below the other two’s form at present. Audience has been an improved sort for gelding and the hood and could be the biggest danger to Kinross. It’s a tricky little puzzle and the markets look about right so there is no value in a selection for me

4.35 We were on Courage Mon Ami at Ascot when he turned over Coltrane in the Gold Cup. It’s 4f shorter today & the softer going does pose a question mark. The ground will be ideal for Coltrane and he did rather give his conquerer a target to aim at when taking up the running 2f out & will be far more at home over this trip. Emily Dickinson looks a bit ungainly at times but has big ability when the ground is soft & she was given too much to do in the Lillie Langtry Stakes here last season , so we know she acts on the track & I can’t see her being out of the first 3 given the conditions at the weight she gets. Advised Bet Emily Dickinson 1/2 pt ew @ 11’2 Paddy Power 4 places or 11/2 standard terms looks fair enough if you can’t get on with PP
